Garifuna Afro-Latino Entertainment, Limited Liability Company (DBA GALENT), was founded in 2013, as a full-service entertainment company and new business ventures. It is a member of the Recording Academy, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI), The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) and NY Is Music. It includes Garifuna Music Group, Garifuna Music Publishing (ASCAP), GALENT Music Publishing (BMI), Garifuna Music Awards©, Gollywood® , Ritmo Urbano™ and The Afro-Latino(a) Experience©. Founder and managing member José Francisco Ávila López, was appointed by Major Bill de Blasio to the first Office of Nightlife at the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Advisory Board.
A key goal was to produce a series of upscale Afro-Latinx Performing Arts events, among them, A Musical Tribute to Aurelio Martinez celebrating the 30th anniversary of His Legendary Musical Career and the 2016, 2017 and 2018 Garifuna Music Awards.
On October 25, 2017, Garifuna Afro-Latino Entertainment Limited Liability Company announced its rebranding as GALENT in an effort to better delineate its goals of serving a diversified Media and Entertainment market place. The rebranding included a new logo and filing of a Certificate of Assumed Name with the New York State Department of State, in compliance with Section 130 of the General Business Law. The aim was to maintain consistency across all our social media profiles, as well as the emerging digital media industry.
As part of the rebranding, we positioned GALENT as a diversified Media and Entertainment company bridging content creation and eCommerce. The goal was to invest in content development with operating divisions handling music publishing, Awards production, Intellectual Property Licensing, digital and video content creation.
As disruptive forces continue to upend traditional ways of doing business, we remained determined to best serve our members by making investments, by taking risks, by actively shaping our future by continuing to transform our company. Therefore, after reading the announcement that Mayor Bill de Blasio and the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment Commissioner Julie Menin, would revitalize the Latin Media and Entertainment Commission for New York City; we made the decision not to produce the 2019 Garifuna Music Awards in order to evaluate the opportunities.
Our analysis of the Latinx population, identified a segment of the population excluded, dismissed and ignored, namely the Afro-Latinx. Therefore, we saw an opportunity to scale GALENT to become the most prominent Compelling Afro-Latinx content creators and eCommerce company, targeting Afro-Latinx audiences.
We aim to become the premier online destination for Afro-Latinx cultural insight, news, and perspective. To develop content that is relatable to the Afro-Latinx population, which addresses issues commonly faced by this segment of the population and, most importantly, we will cast individuals from the segment into visible roles.
The goal is to create great content while accurately portraying the Afro-Latinxs by creating empowering, engaging and culturally relevant content that will influence how Afro-Latinxs are perceived and how they perceive themselves. Therefore, it will have a positive focus on the experiences of Afro-Latinx by representing pride in Afro-Descendant heritage. We build wholesome images of people of Afro-Latinx descent.
Our Unique Value Proposition is having a positive focus on the experiences of Afro-Latinx by representing pride in Black heritage. We build wholesome images of people of African descent. We address Afro-Latinx’s interests and need for access to consumer products and also talk about the experiences of the Afro-Latinx. GALENT provides Afro-Latinx with products and services that provide: Recognition, Respect and Success. Our content aims to transform, educate, enrich, bring people together and elevate the discourse.
